Rosalind Franklin was a brilliant British chemist and crystallographer, known for her pioneering work with x-ray diffraction and responsible for much research and discovery work that led to the understanding of the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). It was her x-ray diffraction studies that provided crucial clues to the structure of DNA and confirmed the Watson-Crick DNA model. Despite all of her hard work in discovering the structure, Franklin received little credit. Her role was overlooked because of her early death and the attitudes of male scientists of that time towards women scientists.
